Slope County, North Dakota

Slope County, North Dakota was carved out of the southern portion of Billings County, after a 1910 vote to separate from Billings County, and resulting litigation.

Slope County was officially organized on January 14, 1915.

The County’s name is derived from a geographical feature known as the Missouri Slope, a common designation for the area of western North Dakota lying west of the Missouri River.

Slope County is bordered:

  • on the north by Billings County, Golden Valley County, and Stark County
  • on the west by Montana,
  • on the south by Bowman County and Adams County, and
  • on the east by Hettinger County.

2012 Per Capita Income

As of 2012, the per capita personal income of Slope County was $87,563.

2010 Population

As of the 2010 Census, the population of Slope County was 727, making it the least populous county in North Dakota and the 20th least populous county in the United States.

County Seat – Amidon

Amidon is the county seat.

2000 Ancestry Composition

As of the 2000 Census, Slope County residents had the following identified ancestral heritage:

  • 46.9% German,
  • 15.2% Norwegian,
  • 7.4 English, and
  • 7.2% Swedish.

2013 Drilling Activities

As of November 30, 2013, there was one active drilling rig operating in Slope County.
