Dunn County, North Dakota was authorized on March 8, 1883, by the Dakota Territory legislature.

Dunn County was established by the 1905 North Dakota state legislature, and officially organized on February 10, 1908.

Dunn County is bordered:

on the north by Mountrail County and McKenzie County,
on the west by Billings County and McKenzie County,
on the south by Stark County and Billings County,
and
on the east by Mercer County, and McLean County.

John Piatt Dunn

Dunn County was named for John Piatt Dunn, an early merchant from Bismarck, who reportedly opened the first drugstore in North Dakota.

2012 Per Capita Income

As of 2012, the per capita personal income of Dunn County, North Dakota was $86,205.

2010 Population

As of the 2010 Census, the population of Dunn County, North Dakota was 3,536.

County Seat – Manning

Since 1905, Manning has been the county seat, but with a population of only 74 as of the 2010 Census, is not its largest city.

That distinction belongs to the city of Killdeer, population 7888 – founded in 1914 on a Northern Pacific Railway branch line which begins in Mandan.

2000 Ancestry Composition

As of the 2000 Census, Dunn County, North Dakota residents had the following identified ancestral heritage:

43.2% German,
and
16.6% Norwegian.

2013 Drilling Activities

As of November 30, 2013, there were 32 active drilling rigs operating in the county.

2012 Oil Production

In 2012, Dunn County, North Dakota was the third largest oil producing county in North Dakota, trailing only Mountrail County, and McKenzie County.
