The Dakota Territorial legislature authorized Billings County in 1879, and it was officially organized on May 4, 1886.

The original area of Billings County was subsequently reduced by the creation of two new North Dakota counties:

• Golden Valley County, in 1912,
  and
• Slope County, in 1915.

Billings County is bordered:

• on the north by McKenzie County and Dunn County,
• on the west by Golden Valley County,
• on the south by Slope County,
  and
• on the east by Dunn County and Stark County.

Frederick H. Billings

Billings County was named for Frederick H. Billings – the president of the Northern Pacific Railway.

As of 2012, the per capita personal income of Billings County was $86,785.

2010 Population

As of the 2010 Census, the population was 783, compared with a population of 10,186 residents as of the 1910 Census.

County Seat – Medora

Medora is both the county seat, and its largest city, with a population of 116 as of the 2010 Census.

As of the 2000 Census, Billings County residents had the following identified ancestral heritage:

• 44.2% German,
• 17.5% Ukranian,
• 8.2% Norwegian,
  and
• 10.6% Irish.
